Today's program is the second of three dedicated to Schubert's "Winterreise" (Winter Journey) following the recent performance of the composer's song-cycle in Madrid by Austrian baritone Florian Boesch, accompanied on the piano by Justus Zeyen. Boesch is this season's "Resident Artist" in the Zarzuela Theater's Lieder Recital series. Of the song-cycle, made up of poems by Wilhelm Müller set to music by Schubert, Susan Youens of Oxford Music Online says: "Winterreise is a psychologically profound study of alienation and melancholia, of Romantic consciousness in disintegration." We hear eight more of the cycle's 24 "lieder" (songs) performed by another frequent visitor to Spain and to Madrid, Matthias Goerne, a leading German baritone for whom the Teatro de la Zarzuela is like a second home. Accompanying Goerne on the piano is Christoph Eschenbach.
