The English Language Broadcast of Radio Exterior de España has been on the air since 1944. Our daily broadcasts seek to inform listeners about goings-on in Spain, as well as offer a Spanish perspective on world events. News, sports and weather, presented live, are followed on weekdays by a variety of different programs on subjects ranging from art and culture to history, politics, and the latest trends. These programs can be heard again at the weekend.

After our newscast we talk to Madrid author and documentary filmmaker Jacobo Rivero, who has just presented his new book about the American city of New Orleans, entitled "Bulbancha: Música, calle y resistencias desde New Orleans" (Bulbancha: Music, the Street, and Resistence in New Orleans), published by Clave Intelectual. Rivero has visited and spent time in this city, world famous for its music and also its cuisine, on half a dozen occasions over the past ten years. One of the things that most struck him about the Crescent City is the role of music in the social fabric of the many different and overlapping communities of New Orleans.

After the news, Amy Egan talks to Michael McCanne and Jaime Weiss, co-directors of "A minor figure", a short experimental documentary that premiered at Documenta Madrid and is about to show at the Galician Curtocircuito film festival. The film traces the path of a Japanese man who snuck into the US in 1988, bought a car and drove around the country buying parts to make several timebombs before he was arrested on the New Jersey Turnpike.

After the news, our broadcast features a new edition of our DX program, in which we answer your cards, letters, and e-mails--and, this time, a voice-mail message as well. We offer listeners who write from the U.S. and the U.K. a beautiful traditional song from the northern Spanish region of Cantabria. Its title is "Noche tranquila y serena," and we hear it in the version of Spanish singer-songwriter and ethnomusicologist Eliseo Parra. This versatile performer and composer, who has received national recognition for his efforts in preserving traditional Spanish popular music, demonstrates utmost respect for the traditional music which he also smoothly manages to make agreeable and contemporary-sounding to modern listeners. The song is from Eliseo Parra's 1998 album "Tribus Hispanas," released on the label Música Sin Fin.

Today, after a brief look at the news, we revisit the interview originally broadcast in May with Marta Ruiz del Árbol, the curator of the retrospective exhibition of the work of American artist Georgia O'Keeffe which ends soon at Madrid's Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. Among other things, Marta Ruiz del Árbol comments on O'Keeffe's two visits in the mid-50s to Spain, where the American artist was particularly struck and fascinated by the work of Spanish painter Francisco de Goya (1746 - 1828). The O'Keeffe exhibition can be visited at the Thyssen through Sunday, August 8th.

Among other things, the accordionist talks about some of the tracks on this excellent album of solo performances of eleven of his original compositions, about "crossover" in music styles, and about his recent performance in Berlin in which he was accompanied by the Berlin Symphony Orchestra.

After a look at current events, today's broadcast features the fourth and final program in our mini-series on Spanish and US relations during the Cold War. The United States became particularly interested in Spain during the last years of the Franco regime, from 1969 to 1975. They were tumultuous years, and the Nixon and Ford administrations were concerned about the status of the American military bases in a Spain without Franco. The accords underwent two renegotiations in this period, in 1970 and in 1975.

English Language Broadcast - Muelle, Madrid's Pioneer of Urban Art - 08/06/21

After a look at the news, we remember one of Spain's first urban street artists, a young man from Madrid who was known as Muelle. His real name was Juan Carlos Argüello and in the late 80s and early 90s there could have been hardly anyone living or even visiting Madrid who had not seen his trademark signature logo spray painted on walls around the city. Three decades later the prestigious Madrid auction house Durán Arte y Subastas recently auctioned a number of works by Muelle. Today's broadcast also features music from the 1960 album "Sketches of Spain," by American jazz trumpeter Miles Davis, including Miles' take on Joaquín Rodrigo's famous "Aranjuez Concerto."

English Language Broadcast - Pablo Heras-Casado conducts "Acordes con solidaridad" charity concert - 03/06/21

After a brief look at news and current events we go Madrid's Teatro Real, the Royal Opera House, where on June 15th the VII edition of the charity concert "Acordes con solidaridad" (chords with solidarity) will be given. This annual event is organized by Spanish NGO Ayuda en acción (aid in action) to raise funds for its educational projects for children and youths in Spain who face marginalization due to poverty. We talk to one of the directors of Ayuda en acción, Marta Marañón, and also to Spanish conductor Pablo Heras-Casado, who has conducted these benefit concerts from the start. This year's concert features the music of Manuel de Falla (his ballet in one act "El amor brujo" (love the enchanter)) as well as that of Maurice Ravel and Gabriel Fauré. Flamenco cantaora or singer Marina Heredia will--like Maestro Heras-Casado and the members of the Madrid Symphony Orchestra--be performing free so that all proceeds can go to the more than 80 projects Ayuda en acción is carrying out across Spain. And of course, our broadcast offers a taste of the music that will be heard at the "Acordes con solidaridad" charity concert: a recording of "El amor brujo" by Marina Heredia accompanied by the Mahler Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Pablo Heras-Casado.

English Language Broadcast - A Songbook in Nahúat: Tuyulu Takwika - 01/06/21

After a brief look at the News, we turn (once again) to Song. Singing a song is not only a good way to learn a language, it can also help preserve the language. Spanish composer and musician Sonia Megías spoke with us about her recent work in El Salvador where she has been working to help recover the autochthonous language Nahúat. Thanks to her many collaborators, Sonia was able to record songs in the field, transcribe them for choir, orchestra and chamber groups and perform them with their native singers as soloists throughout the country. Some of these singers even came to Madrid. Tuyulu Takwika is the songbook that Sonia Megías is now publishing to ensure that the Nahúat language does not disappear. In today's broadcast, after a look at what's happening in Spain, we report on Spain's biggest-ever (although unsuccessful) bank heist, which took place in Barcelona 40 years ago. And we remember Josep Almudéver, the last surviving member of the International Brigades, who has died at the age of 101. The International Brigades were foreign volunteers who came to Spain in 1936 from some 50 countries around the world to fight against fascism in the Spanish Civil War.
